On its southern border along NE Broadway and Weidler Avenues, Irvington has a sizable strip of restaurants, bars, coffee houses, and shops, but apart from that, Irvington is primarily residential. The homes and yards are sprawling, meticulously cared for, and established tree lined streets. And on its east and west sit two large parks. This is a historic neighborhood and many of its beautiful houses are on the National Register of Historic Places.

Laurelhurst is an historic neighborhood of beautiful and expansive vintage homes, not to mention the beautiful Laurelhurst Park. Streets that are not quite on a grid and stone markers flank the entrances to the area, both of which give the neighborhood a vibe of exclusivity. The area is considered one of Portland’s more desirable, with lovely, expensive homes. Laurelhurst, unlike adjacent Portland neighborhoods, is completely residential single-family homes.
A unique, increasingly popular, and constantly developing neighborhood which encompasses Williams and Mississippi Avenues. These two streets have seen much change in the last 10 years with respect to the independent businesses that line their streets and their patrons. This neighborhood stretches over the boundary between North and Northeast Portland. The MAX Yellow Line is located just opposite Interstate 5, connected by North Skidmore Street and the Failing St. pedestrian bridge.
Humboldt is young, urban and hip and, as expected, the streets are lively with pedestrians and cyclists. A number of restaurants and bars make this neighborhood desirable to live in and visit. Humboldt provides easy access to downtown and to other popular surrounding neighborhoods. Portland Community College’s Cascade campus is also found in Humboldt.
Named for the beautiful Cathedral Park, located on the east side of the river and under the St. Johns Bridge, this North Portland neighborhood is in transition. Due to the number of new and younger homeowners moving to the area, homes have been improving and a sense of community has been developing. This area also gets many students who attend the nearby University of Portland.
In the last few years, new homes have been built and older houses have been remodeled. New and younger homeowners moved in and have worked to develop this area as solid North Portland neighborhood. The MAX Yellow line is just a few blocks west and due to the proximity of I-5, a convenient commute to downtown Portland. Piedmont was Portland’s first subdivision and is coming into its own again. Piedmont is also home to the beautiful Peninsula Park and Rose Garden.
St. Johns officially became a Portland neighborhood nearly 100 years ago, but the area still feels like its own small town. Isolated from the rest of Portland by the Willamette River and railway yards, St Johns is largely self-sustaining with grocery stores, shops, and restaurants. Modest sized homes in the neighborhood are still affordable for those looking for starter homes.
Home to the University of Portland, the University Park neighborhood has been experiencing an influx of new residents as housing prices are still low enough to attract first-time buyers. Many of these newer residents have been making wonderful updates to their homes and yards, improving the neighborhood as a whole. Lombard is the main thoroughfare to get you to other parts of town. Homes along Willamette Blvd enjoy expansive river views, and the recent addition of a New Seasons made the area even more desirable.
